The Bjorksten | bit 7 Footwear Tester was developed for the US Army's Natick, MA Research and Development Laboratory in 1977. The device duplicates the movement and downward forces involved in walking at speeds between two and four miles per hour. A prosthetic foot on the device utilizes sensors located at the big toe, instep, inner and outer ball, and inner and outer heel to detect water that infiltrates the footwear. The US Patent Office assigned the device US Patent Number 4432223. Shortly after the equipment was turned over to the Natick scientists, it was used to measure the water resistance of military footwear submitted by each of America's NATO ally countries. The Bjorksten | bit 7 Footwear Tester generated a considerable amount of publicity. Articles in "Industrial Design" and "Golf" magazines describe the operation and uses of the device. Furthermore, an article in "Design News" points out how the unique "Cardan" gearing mechanism is used to create the motion of the human knee. The device has also made cameo appearances on several early evening TV news shows. Footjoy, who makes highly water resistant golf shoes, has several Bjorksten | bit 7 Footwear Testers and uses them both for quality control and new product development.
